Book of the Month: Adam: God’s Beloved

Henri Nouwen left the life of a university professor to join the community of Daybreak: a L’Arche (meaning "The Ark") Community in Toronto. This is one of a family of communities all over the world (started by Jean Vanier when he welcomed two men with disabilities into his home) where people with and without disabilities share life.

When Henri came to Daybreak he was asked to care for a man named Adam. Adam had profound disabilities: could not talk or care for himself. As Henri struggled to care for Adam, struggling more with himself than with the work, he learned how to proclaim the worth of the life of this simple man. He came to see that the theology Adam lived was a gift that taught him about Jesus and about himself. Well worth reading, this book speaks well of the unique and indispensable gifts of God that are offered by those the world ignores or pities.

And while I, the so-called "normal" person, kept wondering how much Adam was like me, he had no ability or need to make any comparisons. He simply lived and by his life invited me to receive his unique gift, wrapped in weakness but given for my transformation. While I tended to worry about what I did and how much I could produce, Adam was announcing to me that "being is more important than doing."
