Joy Living Society: Update

JLS is a Christian residential service provider that is affiliated with Joy Fellowship.
The JLS provides home for the four Joy Fellowship members pictured below.
Gordie and Jackie have lived in a JLS home for over 10 years.

Gordie, John, Fely

Gordie and John live in the Joy House on
Woodstock Ave. in Vancouver.
On the left is Fely, one of the staff,
who loves and cares for the men in their home.

Rebekah, Jackie

Rebekah and Jackie live in the New Ward
Street Home (the Lee Home). They are
supported by three caring women who
encourage them to be good roommates
and be as independent as possible.

Do you have a heart to help support
Jackie, Gordie, John and Rebekah?
Here’s what they need!!

  • Board members with a passion for supporting and advocating for Gordie, Jackie, Rebekah, and John in their homes.

  • A treasurer to come alongside Fred.

  • A secretary.

  • People who feel called to live alongside folks with disabilities, sharing their homes and their lives as caregivers and friends.

  • Friends to regularly visit and facilitate special activities (playing board games, going to the library with Jackie, watching a movie with Gordie, helping the folks cook your own special recipes).

A letter from George Speckman (one off our Joy Fellowship Council Members)

“My brother-in-law comes down from Ocean Falls every December for a month. He and John get along really well and his uncle drives him to his volunteer work and pricks him up when John is finished.

“He brought down $70 of pop cans for recycling and gave them to John. John felt he should share this wealth and wanted to give half to Joy Fellowship. So you will find enclosed a check for $35 signed by John and this is the first time he has ever signed a check payable to someone else.”

Corrections

In our last newsletter I named the National Camp in New Zealand as the CFFD (Christian Fellowship For the Disabled) camp. The National Camp is CMWDT (Christian Ministry with Disabled Trust) and not CFFD. The CFFD branches round the country have their own CFFD camps, i.e., Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch. Also, it was Joy Ministries National that paid Joy Gregory’s plane fare last year, not an individual.

On a windy winter day Merrill and I went down to Bellingham to visit. We went down to the park and walked along the boardwalk to Old Fairhaven. There we fortified ourselves with ice-cream and coffee for the rainy return trip.

Jennifer Armerding took this photo of her family with Joy and Merrill. Malcolm (left) is 15 and loves sounds, the voices of his favorite people and birthdays (anyone’s party will do).

Dana (middle) is 12 and loves to read. Harry Potter and CS Lewis’ Narnia series are his current favorites. He was awarded the “Most Hard Core Camper” at the Middle School Madness Retreat at his church.

Kenzie (adopted last year) is 4 and thrives on driving her mom crazy. She is adventurous, game for anything and loves reading and dress-up. Hannah Joy (in the stroller) who has been fostered by Jenny since her birth has just had her first birthday.
